What is XLIFF, and which tools use it?
XLIFF (XML Localization Interchange File Format) is an open standard for packaging translatable content. A source tool exports the text in structured segments, keeping inline codes, placeholders, and context intact. A translation tool then processes those segments, and the translated file is imported back to rebuild the document.
Tools that export XLIFF based localization packages include Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Experience Manager Guides, Paligo, MadCap Flare and Lingo, and Oxygen XML DITA workflows. These are examples; compatibility with vendor specific packaging conventions may vary.
Can I upload a single XLIFF file, or does it need to be in a ZIP?
Both are accepted. Upload whichever format your tool produces:
- •Single XLIFF file: Accepted extensions are .xlf, .xliff, and .xlif. Upload the file directly.
- •ZIP package: Accepted extension is .zip. A ZIP package can contain one or more XLIFF files alongside related assets such as images or support files.
Some source tools exclude assets such as images or variable definitions from the exported package. Those files may need to be handled separately, depending on your tool.
Which XLIFF versions are supported?
AI-DocTranslate supports XLIFF 1.2 and the XLIFF 2.x family. One current limitation: a single upload cannot mix XLIFF 1.2 and XLIFF 2.x files in the same package. Keep each job to a single version family. If you are unsure which version your tool exports, check the version attribute at the top of the .xlf file.
Why does XLIFF produce better translation results?
XLIFF gives the translation model a significant structural advantage. Every translatable string is isolated in its own segment, with inline codes, variable references, and cross references clearly separated from the surrounding text. The AI translates clearly defined units of meaning, which improves both accuracy and terminology consistency across the document.
A finished rendered document contains the same words, but the structure has to be reconstructed from the visual output. That process introduces additional ambiguity, particularly in complex or highly formatted technical content. If your content already exists in a system that can export XLIFF, that is the recommended path for the best results.
Are inline tags, placeholders, and document structure preserved?
Yes. The pipeline reads XLIFF as structured content. Inline codes and placeholders, such as format markers, variable references and cross reference tags, are carried through and reproduced in the translated output. The rebuilt package follows the same structure as the source, ready to import back into your authoring tool.
Note: some tools use proprietary inline tag formats or XLIFF extensions that go beyond the core standard. Common patterns are handled correctly, but exact import fidelity for every vendor extension cannot be guaranteed. Review the translated package before importing it into your authoring tool.
What do I receive when my XLIFF job completes?
Every completed XLIFF job includes three files:
- •Translated ZIP package: This is the primary output. It contains the translated XLIFF files in the same structure as your original upload.
- •Manifest and model (JSON): A structured record of the job content and segmentation.
- •QA report (JSON): A quality check at segment level, highlighting items for review.
All files are available for download for 7 days. Import the translated ZIP into your source system using the standard import process for your authoring tool.
How large can my file be, and how long are results kept?
Files up to 100 MB are accepted. Once a job completes, your translated output and all supporting files are saved to your account. They are available for download for 7 days. After that window, all uploaded files and results are permanently deleted, so make sure to download everything you need before that deadline.
Which languages can I translate to?
AI-DocTranslate currently supports 27 target languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Dutch, Polish, and more. The full list is visible in the language selector when you start a new job. If you need a language that is not listed, contact AI-DocTranslate support.
Do I need to review the translation after it completes?
Yes. AI translation should always be reviewed before publication, especially for technical, legal, or regulated content. Every completed job includes a QA report that highlights segments that may need attention. Use it as a starting point for corrections; it does not replace a human review of the final output.
